The hermit knelt beside the springs,
And filled his vessels to the brim;
He thanked the Lord for all His things,
And sang a solitary hymn.
He did not know the hidden power
That dwelled within the living water;
He did not heed the warning signs
That marked the fountains' sacred border.

He drank a sip to quench his thirst,
And felt a sudden change within;
His limbs grew weak, his vision blurred,
His mind was seized by unknown sin.
He dropped the glagons on the ground,
And staggered to his humble cell;
He locked the door and made no sound,
But in his heart he heard a knell.

The hermit knelt before the fountains,
And filled his glagons to the brim;
He thanked the Lord for all his bounty,
And sang a solemn, grateful hymn.
He drank from one, and felt a shiver
Of life run through his aged veins;
He drank from two, and felt a quiver
Of death that chilled his bones and brains.
He knew the secret of the waters,
The gift and curse they both bestowed;
He chose to share his fate with others,
And took the glagons down the road.
