I had issues with this, despite adjusting all the settings in vlc and app info that could potentially be causing it to stop. What appears to have worked for me was going into battery, then launch, and changing vlc to manage manually. This is on an honor 7s using android 8.1
Samsung A51. I reproduced the issue. Changing the «Background/PIP» setting did not address the issue. I went to settings, apps, VLC, battery usage, Allow Background Activity, and now the Russian Easter Overture has been playing like five minutes with the screen locked :-D
