Какое видео? Какие драйвера? lspci, glxinfo etc.

Знаю. Видел, что никто не ответил. Но может вдруг сейчас повезет :)

У меня есть смутное подозрение, что я ставил 64-битный Дебиан на 32-битное железо (по-крайней мере, в списке ядер я выбрал почему-то чегото_там_64)?

Да, на интеле есть такая хрень. У меня на 845 проявляется только тогда, когда часто меняется режим работы (переключение в консоль/обратно в иксы, запуск игр, logout). Если не слишком часто - то всё нормально.
