Sun отказывается от линейки Cobalt Linux серверов.

Жалко . Весьма забавная игрушка была .

Неудивительно, в свете выпуска самим Саном Java Enterprise/Desktop System.

Кстати нет ли у кого iso вышеупомянутых систем? Хочется попробовать.

Enterprise System точно видел для Solaris X86.

хм... ну вообще-то, ни jds, ни jes кобальту не замена никаким боком.

да, я понимаю, железо не стоит на месте, но новые х86 сановские сервера - обычные писюки, ничем из-за угла вон не выдающиеся. а кобальт таки - забавная железяка, достойная лучшей участи хотя бы за lcd и кнопки управления на корпусе, что удобно весьма, когда таких девайсов в стойке 40 штук, и вебгуй, действительно позволяющий обслуживать агрегат человеку, который в юниксе ни сном, ни духом...

вопрос конечно интересный... поскольку без самого кобальта интерес представляет только его морда управления - ее оттуда можно честно выдрать. или накатить на кобальтовский инсталл честное ядро из шляпных апдейтов.

а вот обругается ли кобальтовское ядро на типовой писюк - не знаю. и включать кобальт, дабы это поисследовать, на ночь глядя не хочу.

ну на кобальтах камушек MIPS по ходу дела :)))

но железка рульная, у меня 1 в продакшене, полгода аптайм со времени когда сдох UPS :), NetBSD на втором для побаловаться :)

ну на кобальтах камушки следующие: 1,2 - mips, 3,4 - amd k6-2, 550 - PIII. Так что инсталл от 550го, к примеру, на писюке пойти обязан.

Последний кобальт был LX50 Сеичас пошли сервера Sun Fire V60x, V65x и подобные. Скорее всего, Sun отказалась от названия "Cobalt" в линейке своих линукс-серверов

Minimum System Requirements

- An Intel-compatible PC desktop or laptop computer. 
- The computer must have an IDE (ATAPI) CD-ROM drive and must be bootable from
  the CD-ROM drive. 
- The computer must have only one of the following network interface cards 
  (NIC):

		Linksys EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card (LNE100TX)

Installation Instructions

Connect this computer directly to the server appliance. 

- If you are using a crossover cable, connect the crossover cable from the 
network interface card on this computer directly to the primary network 
interface of the server appliance. 

- If you are using a hub and two standard cables, connect one standard cable 
from the network interface card on this computer to the hub.  Connect the 
other standard cable from the primary network interface of the server
appliance to the same hub.  The server appliance must detect a 100BaseT 
connection.  Otherwise, it will not begin the restore process. 


Begin the restore process by net booting the server appliance.  Follow the 
instructions specific to your server appliance. 


Intel-compatible processor models, including: 
	Qube 3 (4000WG, 4010WG and 4100WG)
	RaQ 3 (3000R), RaQ 4 (3100R), RaQ XTR (3500R) and RaQ 550 (4100R) 
	CacheRaQ 4 (3100CR) 

1.  Turn on the server appliance while pressing and holding down the Select (S)
button on the LCD console. 
2.  Continue holding down the Select (S) button until the message "Select 
Option:" appears on the LCD display. 
3.  Press and release the Select (S) button until the message "Boot From Net" 
appears on the LCD display. 
4.  Press and release the Enter (E) button to begin net booting the server 
appliance from the OS Restore CD.  The LCD display shows the message 
"Loading Kernel...". 
5.  Depending on your server, the LCD display may show the message  
"Erase & Rebuild". Use the Left or Right arrow button on the LCD console to 
select [Y]ES. Press and release the Enter (E) button.
6.  Depending on your server, the system may now power down automatically, 
or the message "PLEASE SWITCH OFF POWER NOW" may appear on the LCD display.

The restore process is now complete.  Please turn off both the server 
appliance and the computer, and return them to normal service. 


MIPS processor models, including: 
	Qube 1 (2700WG) and Qube 2 (2800WG) 
	RaQ 1 (2700R) and RaQ 2 (2800R) 
	CacheRaQ 2 (2800CR) 
	NASRaQ (2800N) 

1.  Turn on the server appliance while simultaneously pressing and holding 
down both the left (<) and right (>) arrow buttons on the LCD console. 
2.  Continue holding down both the left (<) and right (>) arrow buttons until 
the message "Net Booting" appears on the LCD display. 
3.  Wait until the message "PLEASE SWITCH OFF POWER NOW" appears on the LCD 
display.  

The restore process is now complete.  Please turn off both the server 
appliance and the computer, and return them to normal service. 


WARNING:  During the restore process, the server appliance may automatically 
reboot itself and perform other installation tasks.  The complete restore 
process may take 45 minutes or longer.  This process must be allowed to 
complete without interruption for a successful restore of the server appliance
software to its original factory-fresh condition.

lx50 - это не кобальт, а интел sa1200 с синей мордой и саньим лейблом. никаких кобальтовских приблуд - ни lcd на панели, ни вебморды lx50 не имеет. и v6хх - это тоже, если меня глаз не подвел, интеловские серверные платформы.
