[12309] more patches

Nokia решила тоже взяться за дело, сваяли набор патчей к CFQ. Вот что пишут по этому поводу разрабы:

With this patchset, I got the following results with wakeup-latency.c (a 10ms periodic timer), running periodic-fork.sh, Xorg, make -j3 and firefox (playing a youtube video), with Xorg moving terminal windows around, in parallel on a UP system (links to the test program source in the dyn min_vruntime patch). The Xorg interactivity is very good with the new features enabled, but was poor originally with the vanilla mainline scheduler.

2.6.36 DRM

The main feature of the Intel DRM in the Linux 2.6.35 kernel was H.264 VA-API decoding support with Intel's newest graphics processors. The Linux 2.6.36 kernel should bring in greater eDP support, various patches all over, and tracepoints support for page-flipping and vblank support. Intel's Embedded DisplayPort (eDP) support within their KMS driver has been ongoing for better supporting this interface that's used internally on newer notebooks for their display panels.

The ATI Radeon DRM driver changes are most prominent and include R600/700 tiling support, R300/500 Hyper-Z support, support for reading thermal sensors on most R600 ASICs, R600 kernel bit state emission minimization, ioport accessors for BIOS scripts, under-scan support for HDMI TVs, and RS690 HDMI audio support. For those unfamiliar with Hyper-Z, it is an ATI technology that originates with their R100 chipsets and is designed to improve rendering efficiency by providing Z-buffer compression, fast clear support of a Z-buffer, and hierarchical Z-buffer that throws out useless pixels before hitting the rendering pipeline.

With the Nouveau DRM for providing open-source graphics support on Linux for NVIDIA graphics processors, the 2.6.36 DRM will offer improved suspend-and-resume support for the NV10 through NV40 GPUs, SIL164 i2C chip support, improved NV50 DisplayPort along with hot-plug support, and EDID over ACPI support.

Спасибо форониксу - http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODQ3Mw

Wu Fengguang and KOSAKI Motohiro have published patches this week that they believe will address some of these responsiveness issues, for which they call the «system goes unresponsive under memory pressure and lots of dirty / writeback pages» bug.

<...>

The patches from Fengguang and Motohiro can be found in this Linux kernel mailing list thread. With the Linux 2.6.36 kernel merge window about to be opened, let's hope these patches work their way in there during this next cycle, but for those planning to run the stock kernel on Ubuntu 10.10 and other Q3'2010 distributions, it is already too late unless these small patches end up being back-ported.

Казалось бы, все хорошо. НО!

Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
107 frames in 5.0 seconds = 21.389 FPS
103 frames in 5.0 seconds = 20.563 FPS
96 frames in 5.0 seconds = 19.164 FPS

Любое OGL приложение ужасно тормозит. С ядром 2.6.34 все аналогично.

UPD: с gallium3d тоже тормозит, да еще и куча глюков вылезает.

Any idea?

KDE SC 4.5 beta 2

Over the last two weeks, roughly since the first beta, 1459 new bugs have been reported, and 1643 bugs have been closed, so we're witnessing a lot of stabilization activity right now. More testing is in place, however, while the restless developers continue to create a rock-stable 4.5.0.

KDE SC 4.5 Beta1

KDE has released a first test version of the released that will be out this summer, in August. KDE SC 4.5.0 is targeted at testers and those that would like to have an early look at what's coming to their desktops and netbooks this summer. KDE is now firmly in beta mode, meaning that the primary focus is on fixing bugs and preparing the stable release of the software compilation this summer.

KDE SC 4.5 sports many improvements, among which are:

  • A reworked notification area. Thanks to the new, D-Bus-based protocol that replaces the old «system tray», a uniform look and consistent interaction scheme can now be guaranteed across applications and toolkits.
  • KWin-Tiling makes it possible to automatically place windows next to each other, employing the window management paradigm also found in window managers such as Ion. Advanced graphical effects, such as blurring the background of translucent windows make for a more pleasurable and usable experience.
  • Users that prefer WebKit above the KHTML rendering engine currently used in Konqueror, KDE's web browser now can install the WebKit component and switch Konqueror to use WebKit as rendering engine for web sites. The WebKit component for Konqueror is available from KDE's Extragear repository, is based on the popular KPart component technology and fully integrates with password storage, content-blocking and other features users already know and love in Konqueror.
  • A special focus of this release cycle is the stability of the software delivered with KDE SC 4.5. While there are many exciting new features, developers have spent considerable amounts of time finishing off features and polishing those that haven't come to full bloom yet.

Initially planned for KDE SC 4.5.0, the KDE PIM team have decided to delay the released of the Akonadi-based KMail for one month. The new version of KMail will be delivered as part of one of KDE's monthly bugfix updates. In the meantime, the stable version of KMail from KDE SC 4.4 will be maintained. Akonadi will centralize syncing and caching of PIM data, deliver wider support for groupware servers and makes handling PIM data, such as contacts, calendaring and email more efficient by sharing it across applications.

Please test this release, and inform us of issues with the software through bugs.kde.org.

все для Ъ.

btrfs будет fs по умолчанию в meego

we made a positive choice for btrfs for a list of reasons

* It's the future of Linux filesystems. We had a case where the old guard (ext3) is getting retired, and there are two new filesystmes on the table (btrfs and ext4). We felt that if we picked ext4, we'd have all the pain of a new filesystem, and we'd then change again a year later to btrfs.

* BTRFS has a strong focus on data integrity, while many other filesystems focus mostly on metadata integrity. For most cases this extra focus is free, however for database applications there is a moderate performance impact. This includes things like duplicating key metadata structures on disk twice, having data checksums, can mark files as critical and for duplication (RAID1)... but basically the whole COW design (never overwrite data) means that you never get garbage in files.

* BTRFS supports on-disk compression, giving both a smaller footprint (factory preload time!) as well as higher throughput on really slow storage.

* BTRFS has writable snapshots. This opens the door to features in MeeGo 1.1 like atomic package updates (already a Fedora 13 feature with btrfs) but also the «Restore to factory defaults» becomes easy: just blow away the snapshot and create a new one and the device is as new. You can even use it to have «true multiple users» in the system, both users have the whole device for themselves with a boot time switch

* Performance for small files. Small files are very common, and BTRFS stores these very efficiently on disk. Whereas other filesystems generally need upto 3 IOs (and thus 3 seeks if your storage rotates) to access a file, BTRFS stores everything together and needs only 1 IO.

* Built in defragmentation - performance feature for things like boot time

* Storage pools: Add and remove storage on the fly. (Yes even for phones this can matter... lets say you have a small flash chip you populate in the factory; this feature allows you to then expand to a secondary storage during first use as if it's one big filesystem... no more /opt issues etc)

* ...

well it's a long list of things that made us chose btrfs over its competition.
