Why?

Many GNU, Linux and other utils are pretty awesome, and obviously some effort has been spent in the past to port them to Windows. However, those projects are either old, abandoned, hosted on CVS, written in platform-specific C, etc.

Rust provides a good, platform-agnostic way of writing systems utils that are easy to compile anywhere, and this is as good a way as any to try and learn it.

В России создадут свой комплекс PLM ИТ

В Министерстве связи и массовых коммуникаций РФ состоялось обсуждение создания отечественного комплекса поддержки полного жизненного цикла изделия. Со стороны разработчиков во встрече участвовали директор МИЦ «НМКН» МВТУ им. Н.Э. Баумана Владимир Нелюб, проректор по научной и инновационной деятельности КНИТУ-КАИ Сергей Михайлов.

Участники кооперации по разработке отечественного глобального программно-аппаратного комплекса поддержки жизненного цикла изделий рассмотрели проект с заместителями Министра связи и массовых коммуникаций РФ М.Шмулевичем и А.Соколовым.

Стороны обсудили цели и задачи формируемого отечественного программно-аппаратного комплекса, а также необходимый набор модулей создаваемой компьютерной среды «замкнутого цикла» от разработки до утилизации.

В рамках формируемого комплексного проекта предлагается создать программный комплекс PLM, который будет включать в себя CAD/CAE/CAM/PDM/PM/CAPP/ERS/MES/CRM/MRO-модули, а также необходимое программное обеспечение и прочие специальные решения, обеспечивающие защиту информации на самом передовом уровне.

«Разработка отечественного комплекса PLM, способного обеспечить независимость от зарубежного „тяжелого“ программного обеспечения актуальна как в военно-промышленном комплексе, так и в базовых отраслях промышленности. МВТУ им. Н.Э. Баумана и КНИТУ-КАИ обладают опытом разработки программных продуктов, успешно внедренных в производственный процесс на отечественных предприятиях и готовы выступить интеграторами проекта по созданию единого глобального программно-аппаратного комплекса поддержки жизненного цикла изделия», - отметил директор МИЦ «НМКН» МВТУ им. We interview Martin Wimpress from the MATE desktop team.

tl;dr:

1) Даже разработчик не знает, как правильно произносится caja.

2) В команде 10 основных разработчиков и ~50 контрибьюторов.

3) OpenSUSE их поддерживает, в частности на gsoc от них идут 3 студента.

4) Самый популярный дистр с Mate — Mint.

5) В последний год они целенаправленно занимались продвижением во все дистрибутивы.

6) Они не успели в 14.04, но в 14.10 Mate будет в офф. репах и, скорее всего, портируют в 14.04 (не знаю, как это в Убунте происходит).

7) Mate легче, чем Gnome 2 и Cinnamon.

8) Они занимаются вопросами accessibility и начали сотрудничать с несколькими дистрибутивами для visually impaired. Mate им понравился. В частности, в 1.8.1 будут исправлены некоторые вещи, которые те попросили.

The system works in 3 different modes: when it plays algorithmically from Pure Data patch, when it’s controlled by Emotiv EPOC EEG interface and in MIDI mode (all of them using Pduino library and custom patch in Pure Data).

It runs on 2 Arduino Uno – mainly for interacting with the computer using standard FIRMATA and secondly only to control the stepper motor which is playing random bass notes when it’s triggered by the first Arduino.

Ъ: РМС из Китая участвовал в видеоконференции с Аргентинским минобороны. Поехать туда он не смог, так как пару лет назад там запустили биометрическую систему контроля SIBIOS, и он заявил, что туда он больше не ездок. О Скайпе он узнал непосредственно перед конференцией, когда что-то менять было уже поздно.

For quite a while now the KDE team has been severely understaffed. We maintain a lot of packages, with many different kinds of bugs, but we don't have enough people to do all the work that needs to be done. We have tools that help us automate the update to new upstream releases, but that's just the tip of the iceberg of our work and so we are writing to invite more people to get involved in the team and help us get KDE software in Debian into better shape.

Have you invited the Kubuntu team to join you? I'll send a mail to the other derivatives I can find that use KDE.

We've invited the Kubuntu team to merge their efforts with ours and use the same packaging vcs. The answer was positive, although the migration is a bit too far in the future. They sort of agree that they could migrate from launchpad bzr to git.debian.org, but as they are a larger group they separate junior and senior developers, requiring a review for each junior commit, for which they have a workflow and systems in place that won't be directly usable in git.debian.org. so the idea is to keep in sync most of our work, and see if we can figure out a way to merge it.

I will be beginning a hiatus from my public projects shortly, which means those projects will be suspended indefinitely, including development on SpaceFM and udevil, updates to this blog, and other little works. Suspended means all motion will stop, but most sites I maintain should remain accessible and unchanged. The duration of this hiatus is undefined. This may morph into a retirement, or I may restart some of it eventually in OpenBSD or another platform, or I may simply return and resume work on some or all of the projects.

With regard to Linux, I plan on falling behind the systemd wave in Debian, avoiding it. I may eventually move toward Gentoo, or over to one of the BSDs as well. But in avoidance of systemd, I won’t be keeping up with the latest edge of Linux for awhile, which makes for a poor developer’s environment. You’re welcome to join me, in which case SpaceFM and udevil should keep working as they are, even without current maintenance. To give you an idea, in the past six months I’ve needed to fix only a handful of bugs, none of them critical. So this isn’t abandoning ship, it’s more like setting sail for real.
